GREELEY, Colo. (July 1, 2008) -- Donating blood this summer can last for miles with “Get Fuel for Giving Life.” Donate blood at the Blood Donor Center at North Colorado Medical Center or on one of their mobile blood drives through and Aug. 30, and you can register to win a $50 gasoline card from ConocoPhillips. Two winners will be drawn weekly.

“We hope this promotion will encourage both current donors and those who have never donated before to give the gift of life,” said Becky Rushold, Blood Donor Services Supervisor. “By donating, not only will you have the opportunity to help save a life and prevent blood shortages this summer, but you might also be filling up your gas tank!”
Summer is an exceptionally difficult time to collect enough blood to meet the needs of local patients. High schools and universities, which account for approximately 10 percent of blood donations during the academic year, are out of session until the fall. At the same time, many are unable to donate blood during the warmer months because of other commitments. Donating blood only takes about 45 minutes and can help save up to three lives. Blood donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh 110 pounds and be in general good health.
As blood donations dip, there is also an increase in the demand for blood to treat trauma patients during the summer. Increased travel leads to a higher number of automobile and motorcycle accidents. Trauma injuries can also be caused by summer activities such as boating and mowing the lawn.
The need for blood never diminishes. Each day, the Blood Donor Center must collect 50 units of blood to meet the need of local patients. North Colorado Medical Center is the only nonprofit organization that provides needed blood products for hospital patients at McKee Medical Center in Loveland, East Morgan County Hospital in Brush, and Sterling Regional Medical Center in Sterling.
