Language and Interpretation Services

At Banner Health we recognize good communication is at the foundation of your care. For our patients and their companions with communication barriers, we have resources available to enable your full participation in health care services.

Interpretation Services or Other Accommodations

The services of an interpreter or other accommodations are made available to patients or their companions upon request, or when Banner staff identifies these needs.  We provide access to interpreters 24/7 at no cost to you. Patients should tell staff about their interpretation/accommodation needs as soon as health care services are sought, or anytime during treatment.

Interpretation by a patient’s family member or friend is discouraged due to issues of confidentiality and medical accuracy. For unforeseen emergent situations, Banner Health may need to rely on these individuals until a qualified interpreter is available.

Banner will partner with you to find accommodations to effectively communicate with our health care teams.

For deaf or hard of hearing patients, communication accommodations may include:

  • Sign language interpreters through Video Remote Interpretation (VRI)
  • On-site sign language or tactile interpreters provided by contracted agencies
  • Writing materials and whiteboards for written communication
  • Video Relay Phones in our hospital lobbies
  • Any combination of the above

For patients with limited English proficiency who prefer to receive their health care information in a language other than English, accommodations may include:

  • Video Remote Interpreters (VRI)
  • Over-the-phone Interpreters (OPI)
  • Banner staff Spanish medical interpreters
  • Contracted on-site agency interpreters
  • Banner trained Spanish Language Assistants
  • Translation services for written documents

For blind or low vision patients, communication accommodations may include:

  • Guidance and verbal instructions regarding surroundings and obstacles
  • Documents provided in enlarged font size
  • Staff reading and providing information about a treatment or procedure
  • Verbal discharge or follow-up information including leaving instructions on a cell or home phone for later reference.

For patients with speech impairments, one or more of the following aids will be made available:

  • Writing materials
  • Communication boards
  • A laptop or tablet
