COVID-19 Testing

Banner Health offers diagnostic COVID-19 testing to find out if you are currently infected. We do not offer antibody testing.

How is COVID-19 diagnosed?

COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, can be diagnosed in two main ways:

  • Antigen test
  • Molecular (PCR) test

What is an antigen test?

An antigen test looks for specific proteins on the surface of the virus. These tests:

  • Provide results in about 15 minutes
  • Are often used at home
  • Are easy to use

However, antigen tests are less sensitive than molecular tests. They work best in the first 5–7 days of symptoms, but can give false-negative results—especially if you're asymptomatic or testing later in the illness. If your result is negative but you still have symptoms or a known exposure, a molecular (PCR) test may be recommended for confirmation.

What is a molecular (PCR) test?

A molecular test detects the virus’s genetic material. It is:

  • Performed in a lab
  • Able to find very small amounts of the virus
  • Considered the most accurate type of COVID-19 test

What kind of test does Banner Health use?

Banner Health uses only molecular (PCR) testing for COVID-19. This ensures that you receive the most accurate results without needing a follow-up test. We believe this is the safest, most reliable way to guide your care and protect our community.

How long will my test results take?

Banner Health partners with Sonora Quest Laboratories to process COVID-19 samples.

Because we don’t process tests in-house, turnaround times may vary.

For the latest information, visit the Sonora Quest website

Why might I be retested after using a home test?

Most at-home COVID-19 tests are antigen tests. Because they’re not as accurate, we may repeat your test using a molecular method to confirm your results. Accurate results help ensure you get the right care and protect those around you.

Where can I get tested?

Banner Urgent Care offers COVID-19 testing for people with symptoms or known exposure. You may also:

  • Contact your primary care provider
  • Check your state or local health department for other testing locations

What to expect during your appointment

  1. Wear a mask and bring your insurance card, if you have one
  2. Check in and complete any paperwork
  3. A team member will take your vitals and review your health history
  4. A provider will assess your symptoms and determine if a test is needed
  5. If needed, a nasal swab will be used to collect your sample
  6. After testing, return home and stay isolated until you get your results

We’ll call you with your results. You can also check your Banner Health or Sonora Quest patient portal.

What happens after I get my test results?

If you test negative:

  • You can resume normal activities if you feel well and are fever-free for at least 24 hours (without fever-reducing medication).
  • If you still have symptoms, stay home and manage them. You may be sick with something else that can still spread to others.

If you test positive:

  • Stay home and away from others until symptoms are improving and you’ve been fever-free for at least 24 hours (without using medicine).
  • For 5 more days after that, continue taking precautions:
    • Wear a well-fitting mask
    • Avoid close contact with others, especially those at high risk
    • Improve indoor air flow and practice good hygiene

When should I go to the emergency room?

If you have severe symptoms such as:

  • Trouble breathing
  • Chest pain or pressure
  • Confusion
  • Inability to stay awake

Go to the nearest emergency room right away. Wear a mask or put on one provided by the hospital to help protect others.
