Banner Health celebrated its 20-year anniversary in 2019.
On Sept. 1, 1999, nonprofits Samaritan Health System and Lutheran Health System announce merger, creating Banner Health. Lutheran Health System was known as a respected health care provider in the rural West and Midwest. Samaritan Health System was known for clinical excellence provided in communities in California and Arizona, primarily in the Phoenix metro area.
At the time of the merger, Banner Health was in 14 states, had 22,500 employees, with 32 hospitals and 2,882 beds.
Since then, Banner Health has grown into one of the largest health care systems in the country, and is in six states and has more than 39,000 employees, 28 hospitals and a growing network of health centers and clinics.
