We want to make it as easy as possible for you to admit your patients to Banner Thunderbird Medical Center. A physician order is required for all patient admissions to Banner Thunderbird Medical Center. Patients may be treated only by providers who have submitted proper credentials and have been granted privileges on the medical staff.

Direct admits
Your patient does not have to be sent to the ED to get admitted! Call Bed Placement (602)  865-4444 for direct admits, and be prepared to provide the following information:

  • Patient name
  • Birth date
  • Sex
  • Face sheet
  • Contact numbers for attending physician or his/her representative

In certain situations insurance information is necessary to ensure prior authorization is received.

A patient placement representative will arrange for bed assignment if a bed is available or will place the patient on a waiting list. If a direct admit is in advance of a procedure, the placement representative keeps the information until the procedure date, but providers should keep in mind there may be delays due to patient census.

Hospitalists

Banner Thunderbird Medical Center provides in-house hospitalist coverage for patients. Hospitalists provide acute inpatient care 24/7, assisting providers on admission and discharge, as well as coordinate care for inpatients during their hospital stay.

If you are looking to schedule a test or a procedure for your patient, we have direct contact numbers available for you and your staff to make it as easy as possible.

Banner Thunderbird Medical Center offers both on-site medical interpreters and the Cyracom interpretation system to make sure all patients and physicians can communicate effectively and safely.

It is Medical Interpreter Policy to only use the hospital medical interpreters, video remote interpretation (VRI) services or telephonic interpreter services contracted by Banner Health for interpreting to patients, patients' family members and physicians. Interpretation by patient's family, friends, or untrained staff members is prohibited except in matters of life and death.

All patients expect you to communicate directly with them. It is a sign of respect. If you take ownership of any language limitation or lack of proficiency, your patients will appreciate your honesty.

On-Site Spanish Interpreters
Banner Thunderbird provides on-site, certified Spanish medical interpreters for the convenience of our physicians, staff and patients. You can reach a Spanish language medical interpreter by calling the Vocera line at (602) 865-4350 (Tip: program this number into your phone) and say "Interpreter" when prompted. You will then be connected with a Spanish interpreter.

Banner Thunderbird's Spanish language medical interpreters are available from 7 a.m. to midnight, Monday through Friday, and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. They are also available during early pre-op hours by appointment. Ask the nurse to submit a request or request through Pre-Admission testing.

Sign Language Interpreting Service
Banner Thunderbird can assist with interpretation for our hearing impaired/deaf patients, as well as those that speak Vietnamese, Somalian, Spanish and Russian. The Video Remote Interpretation (VRI) is based on a software program called InDemand. The program is accessible on portable computer workstations located throughout Banner Thunderbird that have been equipped with a larger monitor that includes a video camera and microphone on top and a sound bar on the bottom of the screen. Nurses on the floor have been trained to use the system and can assist you.

Phone Interpreter Service
When our medical interpreters are unavailable or in cases where a patient speak a foreign language other than Spanish, Banner Thunderbird enables physicians and staff to use our Cyracom interpretation phone system. Please ask your nurse or Health Unit Secretary to connect you to the Cyracom system.

Note:  Title VI of the federal Civil Rights Act requires that hospitals provide interpreting services to Limited English Proficients. It is Banner Thunderbird policy to use ONLY a hospital medical interpreter or telephone service contracted by Banner Health for interpreting to patients, patients’ family members and physicians. Interpretation by family, friends, or untrained staff members is prohibited.
