There are currently 35 million Americans over the age of 65 and that number will double by the year 2030. In Arizona, the number of residents age 60 and older will double to 1.8 million in the next 15 years.
The demand for geriatric trained physicians will continue to grow as well. While there are currently 8,000 physicians specializing in geriatrics, the need will triple to 24,000 with the increases in the senior population. Geriatrician career opportunities will subsequently increase in the Sun Cities and Phoenix metropolitan area and the nation.
University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix Campus Family Medicine Geriatric Fellowship Program is a one-year program that places a strong emphasis on clinical geriatrics. The program offers a unique learning opportunity because most of the educational experiences take place in the Sun Cites area, made up of Sun City, Sun City West, Sun City Grand, and Sun City Fiesta.
The more than 100,000 seniors living in these areas are served by Banner Health, a primary health care organization that operates Banner Boswell and Banner Del E. Webb Medical Centers.
