Banner Health provider becomes certified HIV specialist

Provider at North Colorado Family Medicine clinic is now specialized through American Academy of HIV Medicine

GREELEY, Colo. (Jan. 4, 2023) – In an area of specialty medicine where the number of practicing providers has been dwindling, Michael D. Renecle (he/him/his), D.O., DABFM, AAHIVS, a medical professional with Banner Health’s North Colorado Family Medicine Residency brings heightened expertise to HIV care. Dr. Renecle is a newly certified HIV Specialist™, which is professionally designated by the letters “AAHIVS” from the American Academy of HIV Medicine (AAHIVM).

As a family medicine provider, Dr. Renecle is well versed in chronic diseases. HIV is a chronic disease that requires an additional level of knowledge that he is now proficient in providing to patients in northern Colorado and surrounding areas.

AAHIVM HIV Specialists are experienced medical professionals who pass a rigorous, psychometrically sound exam on all aspects of HIV medical care. In addition to successful completion of the exam, requirements for becoming a credentialed HIV Specialist include maintaining a current medical license, providing direct involvement and/or leadership in HIV care and treatment and minimum continuing education credits within the 36 months preceding the date of application.

“This fits so well into what we do as family medicine providers where we take care of the whole person,” Dr. Renecle said. “However, HIV is very specialized and it comes with an array of social issues and often other chronic diseases. If you don’t know what you are doing, you could get into trouble and miss other important aspects. Bringing visibility to HIV, for which we are still seeing new cases, is important. There is a need for people in our community to receive comprehensive HIV care. The community needs specialized providers.”

The Academy’s HIV-focused professional certifications are the first and only credentials offered domestically and internationally to physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and pharmacists specializing in advanced-level HIV care. The HIV Specialist (AAHIVS) credential is available to practicing frontline clinical providers.

Dr. Renecle completed his residency at the North Colorado Family Medicine Residency Program in Greeley specializing in full-scope family medicine with surgical obstetrics. He then pursued a faculty development fellowship at Denver Health specializing in LGBTQIA+ health, transgender and non-binary health, sexual health and HIV medicine. Dr. Renecle is committed to caring for patients in the northern Colorado area with his unique expertise and passion while also teaching the next generation of family medicine residents, including in the area of HIV medicine.

“It is so exciting to be a part of HIV medicine today,” Dr. Renecle said. “The amount of clinical changes we see in this area annually, is like no other area in medicine. While HIV is a chronic disease, people who receive adequate care and treatment can live happy and healthy lives. I am still hoping that maybe in my lifetime, HIV will be a thing of the past. For now, we need to work diligently to reduce HIV transmission and to ensure our patients living with HIV are established in our clinics and can become undetectable. We know that undetectable equals untransmittable.”
