SCOTTSDALE, SALT RIVER INDIAN COMMUNITY, Ariz. (April 27, 2022) — A groundbreaking ceremony today marks the official launch of Banner Sports Medicine Scottsdale, which is slated to open in 2023 as a comprehensive, one-stop destination for numerous sports medicine services and specialists under one roof.

The Phoenix Suns Gorilla and Baxter of the Arizona Diamondbacks, along with Suns dancers and members of the D-backs rally-back team, were on hand to help celebrate the momentous occasion.

“Banner Sports Medicine Scottsdale represents a signature milestone in our pledge to being a leader in health care and to growing our presence in the Northeast Valley,” said Scott Nordlund, executive vice president and chief strategy and growth officer for Banner Health. “This event is representative of a broader commitment to be here for the community in ways that have never been seen before in Arizona and in the Southwest.”

Dr. Evan Lederman, chief of Sports Medicine at Banner Health, said the center has been a longtime vision for him and his colleagues, including his partners, Dr. Thomas Carter and Dr. Steven Erickson, who leads the nationally renowned Banner – University Sports Medicine and Concussion Specialists. “One of the unique features of this new facility will be the biomechanics lab, where motion-capture technology will allow real-time analysis of athletic performance for athletes in all sports, including baseball, golf, basketball, volleyball and for runners using a state-of-the-art treadmill.”

The three-story, 80,000-square-foot center will welcome and serve athletes at all levels, from youth to professionals. The $54 million project is part of real estate development firm Alter Group’s Riverwalk at Talking Stick mixed-use development.

“This center will give us the ability to reach a diverse population of people who participate in sports, not only in Arizona, but across the country,” said Quentin P. Smith Jr., chairman of the Banner Health Board of Directors. “A significant philanthropic component of this project will help ensure that young people across the state will have equal opportunity to fulfill their athletic aspirations.”

The project is located on sacred Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community land. Doran Dalton, representing that community, said, “The extensive services this facility will provide will make a great contribution to the sports and wellness industry, and strengthen the diverse offerings available here in the community.”

Once completed, the comprehensive, one-stop destination will offer numerous sports medicine services and specialists under one roof, with internationally and nationally renowned sports medicine providers and leaders. Banner Sports Medicine Scottsdale will include:

  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Primary care sports medicine
  • Concussion care
  • Ambulatory surgery center
  • Physical Therapy
  • Medical imaging
  • Performance assessment and training
  • Strength and conditioning
  • Sports nutrition
  • Sports psychology

The development is in strategic alignment with Banner’s partnership with prominent local athletic teams, including Arizona Diamondbacks, Phoenix Suns, Phoenix Mercury, Arizona Coyotes, Tucson Roadrunners and University of Arizona.

Jason Rowley, president and CEO of the Phoenix Suns, said, “Having partners that bring the best care to bear on our athletes gives us a competitive advantage. When we look at the facility Banner is developing here, it’s nothing short of amazing.  We know first-hand what having a first-class, world-class facility can do for you.”

Representing the Arizona Diamondbacks, president and CEO Derrick Hall, said, “Our partnership with Banner means the world to us, and for us to have this partnership and facility in such close proximity is going to be fantastic. We want to align with partners that share our philosophies and values, and that’s Banner.”
