PHOENIX (Jan. 14, 2025) — Banner Poison Control Center is urging residents to be vigilant about the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, especially during the colder months when heating appliances are in frequent use. Often referred to as the "silent killer," carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can cause serious illness or death if undetected.
“Carbon monoxide poisoning can happen quickly and without warning,” said Maureen Roland, director of the Banner Poison Control Center. “It’s critical to recognize the signs, which include headache, dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath, and confusion. If you suspect CO poisoning, leave the area immediately and seek fresh air before calling 911 or your local poison control center.”
Banner Poison Control Center emphasizes the importance of preventative measures, such as installing carbon monoxide detectors in homes, regularly inspecting heating appliances, and never using generators or grills indoors. The poison control center received 191 carbon monoxide exposure calls in 2024.
