Pool therapy offering mental health benefits for patients at Banner Behavioral Health Hospital

SCOTTSDALE, AZ (May 14, 2024) - Just in time for the warm summer months, patients at Banner Behavioral Health Hospital in Scottsdale will now be able to participate in pool therapy. This program is being offered at the hospital’s onsite pool and will be available to patients until September.

Aquatic therapy includes exercises that benefit the mental and physical well-being of the patient and is guided by the facility’s trained recreational therapy department twice a week. It can benefit patients who suffer with anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression.

“For our adolescent patients, many of them have never heard of games such as ‘Marco/Polo’ or ‘Submarine’ - so through those games, the therapists are able to teach life skills such as team building and the importance of working together,” said Erin Fox, head of the pool therapy program. “Some of our adult patients are swimmers and will want to swim laps in the pool or engage in other water aerobics, which supports their overall mental and physical well-being during their stay with us.”

Aquatic therapy at Banner Behavioral Health Hospital has been offered for the past 40 years. However, a new program curriculum was recently implemented that helps patients understand how they can utilize pool or water therapy for healthy coping skills after discharge.

“We have had patients that make comments about how their mood improves just being near the water or talk about childhood memories of being in the pool,” Fox notes. “This is a supplemental program to the additional therapy that is already provided.”
