Banner Health Torrington Community Hospital brings local resident relief with robotic-assisted knee surgery

Stryker’s Mako SmartRobotics system recreates natural knee kinematics

TORRINGTON, Wyo. (Nov. 4, 2024) – Banner Health Torrington Community Hospital continues to revolutionize patient care using the Stryker Mako SmartRobotics™ system, which performs precision knee replacements with faster recovery times.

Carol Lessard, 67, a longtime Wyoming resident and retired school teacher, recently underwent knee replacement surgery performed by Eleanor von Stade, MD, and was pleased to get such excellent care close to home.

On Sept. 4, 2024, Lessard had her knee replaced using the Mako system. Although unfamiliar with robotic-assisted surgery and its benefits, she trusted Dr. von Stade’s recommendation to use the new technology.

The Mako Total Knee surgery combines Stryker’s advanced robotic technology with its clinically successful Triathlon Total Knee System, which enables surgeons to have a more predictable surgical experience with increased precision and accuracy.

In clinical studies, Mako Total Knee demonstrated the potential for patients to experience less pain, reduced need for opiate analgesics, less need for inpatient physical therapy, reduced duration of hospital stays, improved knee flexion and greater soft tissue protection compared to manual techniques.

“I had heard so many great things about Dr. von Stade and the robotic system from other patients who had successful knee replacements and I really trusted her to do my surgery,” she said. “I’m feeling great.”

Having lived in Wyoming for more than 40 years, Carol is no stranger to traveling for health care but she was thrilled to find exceptional care close to home. “It’s a perfect team, we’re so blessed to have doctors like Dr. von Stade combined with this technology at Banner. It was a no-brainer to stay here and my overall experience was tremendous.”

Carol’s experience exceeded her expectations – from the cleanliness of the hospital to the professionalism and friendliness of the staff. “Everyone was so nice and professional. Leaving my first appointment, I actually felt uplifted. I just thought, ‘wow.’”

As an avid walker, Carol had been struggling with knee pain for years. Post-surgery, she is already walking better and is excited about the continued improvement and plans to do her other knee sometime next year.

“The precision and personalization the Mako robot offers allows for a more accurate placement, improving outcomes and reducing recovery times,” Dr. von Stade said. “We are fortunate to provide this state-of-the-art technology to our patients so they don’t have to travel out of their way to get help.”
