TUCSON, Ariz. (Dec. 10, 2024) – Banner – University Medical Center Tucson marked the grand opening of its same-day surgery center Tuesday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The $22 million facility offers patients the convenience of outpatient procedures in a state-of-the-art environment.
The new center is accessed through a separate entrance on the east side of the hospital and features dedicated parking, a large waiting area, six new operating rooms and 25 pre- and post-surgery beds, with the flexibility to expand to meet future demand.
The new center will primarily serve orthopaedic patients and other patients undergoing plastic and reconstructive surgery; ear, nose and throat surgery; and certain neurosurgical procedures that do not have a hospital stay of more than 24 hours.
“With the opening of our Same Day Surgery Center, we are setting a new benchmark for outpatient surgical care in southern Arizona,” said Meiko Onken, chief operating officer at Banner – University Medicine Tucson.
Construction of the 28,000-square-foot facility began in the summer of 2023. In addition to the new operating rooms, Banner – University Medical Center Tucson has 24 outpatient operating rooms, where approximately 15,000 outpatient surgical cases are performed annually.
This milestone highlights Banner – University Medicine’s continued commitment to increasing access to advanced medical care while enhancing the patient experience for southern Arizona residents. In July, Banner – University Medical Center Tucson was named by U.S. News & World Report as a 2024-2025 Best Regional Hospital, earning the No. 1 spot in Tucson and No. 3 in Arizona.
