Weapons Detection System

To ensure the safety of our team members, patients and visitors, Banner Health has installed concealed weapon detection systems at our Emergency Department entrance, and Main Lobby entrance. These detection systems are one of the many safety protocols we have in place throughout our facilities.

What You Need to Know

1. Why is Banner Health installing weapon detection systems?

The safety and wellbeing of our team members, patients and patient families is our top priority. As part of our continued security efforts, we’re installing the Weapon Detection System at entrances at select locations across our system. The use of this system is another layer of our comprehensive security program.

2. Who’s required to go through the weapon detection system?

Any individual entering our facility and emergency department is required to walk through the detection system. Anyone previously screened who leaves the facility must be rescreened before reentering.

3. Will the detector in any way impact implanted devices, such as a pacemaker or defibrillator?

We recommend our patients with medically implanted devices enter through the system as it is considered safe with low to no risk. If an individual isn’t comfortable doing so, they may request an alternative screening.

4. Will the detection system impact pregnant women?

Initial testing indicates the system has low to no risk for pregnant women. If, however, a pregnant woman isn’t comfortable going through the screening system, they may request an alternative screening.

5. I use a wheelchair. Will I still be required to go through the weapon detection system?

Patients and visitors who may have difficulty moving through the detection system, such as those in wheelchairs and on stretchers, will be screened with a handheld device.

6. What personal items aren’t allowed in the hospital?

Any personal item that’s considered a weapon isn’t allowed in our facilities. This includes any firearm and any type or style of knife, edged weapon or any object that security believes is a danger.

7. What happens if I accidentally bring a prohibited item with me to the facility?

You’ll be given an opportunity to return prohibited items to your vehicle. If you don’t have a vehicle on-site, our security officers will hold the item for pickup after your visit.
