Common Screenings and Diagnostics

Lab testing is an essential part of your care. Here are some of the common screenings and diagnostics your doctor may recommend:

General Chemistry

General chemistry labs look at several chemicals and how much of them are in your body. These tests are commonly performed to evaluate organ function and screen for any abnormalities that may need to be addressed as part of a routine checkup.

Some common general chemistry screenings include:

  • Blood-glucose
  • Carbon dioxide
  • Potassium
  • Calcium
  • Total Protein
  • Lipid Panels, which includes cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL)
  • Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP)

General Hematology

The main screening under general hematology is the Complete Blood Count, or CBC. The CBC checks several factors within your blood and helps determine overall health. While a CBC may be ordered routinely by your doctor, it can also aid in diagnosing:

  • Anemia
  • Certain cancers of the blood
  • Inflammatory diseases

Additionally, a CBC can be used to help monitor blood loss or infection.

Throat Culture

Your doctor may order a throat culture if you have a sore throat. Typically using a cotton swab, the doctor or nurse will collect a sample of saliva from the back of your throat to check for bacteria, such as:

  • Strep
  • Pneumonia
  • Tonsillitis
  • Whooping Cough
  • Meningitis

Urine Tests

A urine test is a good way to determine the health of your kidneys. Because your kidneys filter your blood, any toxins in your blood will show up in your urine.

Urine tests may also be used to detect:

  • Urinary tract infections
  • Diabetes
  • Liver Problems
  • Some Metabolic Conditions

Special Chemistry

Special chemistry tests provide information about more advanced markers in your blood or other bodily fluids. Specialty chemistry tests include:

  • Thyroid
  • Cardiac Markers
  • Therapeutic drug monitoring, such as Digoxin, Dilantin, Carbamazepine, Valproic Acid and Vancomycin
  • HA1C
  • Prostate-specific antigen (PSA)
  • HIV
  • Ferritin

Rapid Diagnostic Tests

A rapid diagnostic test (RDT) provides results back in a matter of minutes. Your doctor may use these to check for common illnesses, including:

  • Strep throat
  • Respiratory Syncytial Virus, or RSV
  • Influenza

Inpatient Services

During a hospital stay, lab tests may be performed routinely. You may need to have blood drawn to check for signs of infection, anemia, immune compromise or bleeding. A blood draw may also be useful for your doctor to monitor information about your organs, blood sugar, calcium and other minerals.

Additionally, lab tests can be used during an inpatient stay to help diagnose certain medical conditions or as a way to monitor your response to a new treatment.

Outpatient Services

Routine lab services are a normal part of annual wellness exams and doctor checkups. Your doctor may also recommend certain lab tests to help diagnose many conditions or symptoms.

You may also need outpatient lab services if you are preparing for surgery.

We offer many outpatient lab location options for you. Our partners at Sonora Quest Labs offer lab locations throughout Arizona while Horizon Labs serves the Northern Colorado community.
