Teachers identify the individual learning styles of each student and tailor a program specific to their academic, social and behavioral needs. This individualized approach to learning is a hallmark of the Banner Academy and has led to academic success for thousands of its students over the last 35 years.
The animals in our school provide a unique opportunity for students to learn about, care for and interact with them. Our variety of reptiles, birds and mammals help students who have difficulty expressing themselves verbally find an avenue for connecting with others. Animals also help students regulate their emotions by reducing anxiety and promoting a sense of calm.
Life and social skills development are an integral part of the curriculum. Classes emphasize forming healthy relationships with peers and adults and learning to read the subtle social cues necessary for everyday life. Classes are conducted in a group setting where students learn the appropriate give-and-take involved in discussing social mores, customs, rules and pragmatics. Experienced counselors, a speech pathologist and an occupational therapist round out the professional support services available at the school.
