Lymphedema Therapy Treatment

What is lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a condition that causes swelling in one or both arms or legs due to a blockage in the lymphatic system. It often develops after lymph nodes are removed or damaged, typically from cancer treatment.

Types of lymphedema

There are two main types of lymphedema:

  • Primary lymphedema – A rare, inherited condition that occurs on its own.
  • Secondary lymphedema – More common and caused by damage to the lymphatic system from surgery, radiation therapy, cancer, infection or injury.

Lymphedema is different from edema, which is swelling caused by fluid buildup due to other health conditions. Edema treatment differs from lymphedema treatment.

Lymphedema therapy and treatment options

Lymphedema therapy focuses on reducing swelling and improving movement. A doctor may recommend:

  • Compression garments – Special socks or sleeves that help reduce swelling.
  • Manual lymphatic drainage – A gentle massage technique to improve fluid movement.
  • Exercise – Specific movements to help stimulate circulation in the affected area.

While surgery may help in some cases, there is no permanent cure for lymphedema. However, therapy can effectively manage symptoms.

Who can benefit from lymphedema therapy?

Lymphedema therapy is beneficial for people who have had:

  • Lymph node removal
  • Radiation therapy
  • Breast cancer treatment
  • Traumatic injuries
  • Other conditions that affect the lymphatic system

Benefits of lymphedema therapy

Lymphedema treatment can help:

  • Reduce swelling
  • Improve mobility in the affected area
  • Decrease pain
  • Lower the risk of infection

What to expect during lymphedema therapy

During your first session, a therapist will assess your condition and discuss your medical history. Therapy often includes massage and stretching techniques to help drain excess fluid.

Managing lymphedema after therapy

After therapy, your therapist may recommend at-home exercises and self-care techniques. If symptoms worsen, contact your doctor or therapist for guidance.

Lymphedema therapy can help improve your quality of life by reducing swelling and discomfort. Talk to your doctor about treatment options that may be right for you.
