Diagnosis & Screening

How are rheumatic diseases diagnosed?

Rheumatic diseases affect each person differently. They can affect different body areas, including skin, blood vessels and organs. These factors make it difficult to diagnose.

To provide accurate diagnoses and effective treatment plans, your rheumatologist will use a range of tests and procedures. These may include:

  • Blood tests: Assessing blood markers can help detect inflammation and antibodies associated with certain diseases, such as rheumatoid factor, anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide and antinuclear antibodies.
  • Medical imaging: Imaging tests, such as X-rays, CT scans and MRI scans, help visualize the affected joints, bones and tissues, providing valuable information for diagnosis and treatment planning.
  • Joint aspiration: This procedure can also help diagnose arthritis and other joint problems. Your rheumatologist will look at the fluid to find out what type of arthritis you have, like gout or rheumatoid arthritis.

How soon should I see a rheumatologist?

Don’t delay care and treatment. Some rheumatic diseases, like arthritis, can cause permanent joint damage. It’s important to receive care in earlier stages to lower your risk and slow the progression of the disease.

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, contact your primary care provider or one of our rheumatologists for further evaluation and diagnosis:

  • Pain, stiffness or swelling in more than one joint
  • Limited range of motion
  • Muscle pain and weakness
  • Feeling chronically tired and exhausted
  • Skin rashes, lesions or changes in skin color
  • A sensation of pins and needles in your hands and feet
  • Eye redness, pain, sensitivity to light or blurred vision
  • Hair loss

It’s important to note that these symptoms can be caused by various conditions, not exclusively rheumatic diseases. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms and suspect a rheumatic condition, consult one of our Banner Health specialists, who will help you obtain an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
