Heart transplants can be performed on a patient at any age, from newborns into adulthood. Banner Health offers our pediatric cardiology services for those under age 18. Additional factors may also be considered for patients over age 70. Talk to your doctor to learn more about age eligibility.
To qualify for a heart transplant, patients must be diagnosed with end-stage heart failure. Patients will also receive a heart evaluation. If approved, patients will be added to the heart transplant waiting list until a donor heart becomes available.
For those who do not qualify for a heart transplant, an artificial heart or mechanical circulatory support device (MCS) may be an option. The team at Banner will work with you to explore all options, including device implantation.
Patients who qualify for a heart transplant must be healthy, besides their heart. Candidates must also refrain from drinking or smoking tobacco. Additionally, patients who are candidates for a heart transplant must be able to commit to the transplant process from evaluation, surgery, recovery and into life.
