Also known as gastric cancer, stomach cancer typically begins within the mucus-producing cells that line the stomach. Stomach cancer develops slowly over time and its early stages rarely cause symptoms.
There are a few types of stomach cancer that can develop in different parts of the stomach. Each type of stomach cancer has its own symptoms, which means different treatments and outcomes occur depending on the type.
While there are different types of stomach cancer, the main risk factors for all types are obesity and a history of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
There are several other factors that can increase a person’s risk of developing stomach cancer, including family history, smoking and a diet high in salty and smoked foods.
