Recovery and Maintenance

SAMHSA's working definition of recovery is A process of change through which individuals

  • Improve their health and wellness,
  • Live self-directed lives, and
  • Strive to reach their full potential.

Their four dimensions of recovery include:

  • Health: Overcoming or managing one’s disease(s) or symptoms.
  • Home: Having a stable and safe place to live.
  • Purpose: Conducting meaningful daily activities and the independence, income, and resources to participate in society.
  • Community: Having relationships and social networks that provide support, friendship, love, and hope.

Develop a Growth Mindset to Support Your Journey

Your journey to wellness begins with improving your health. Developing a growth mindset can support your journey. You do not have to be limited by negative thoughts and beliefs. Instead, you can choose to believe that hard work and determination can lead to success.

Here are five things you can do to develop a growth mindset:

  • Celebrate your strengths
  • Start with small goals
  • Practice positive self-talk
  • Reframe failure as a learning opportunity
  • Recognize that delay is not denial

By developing a growth mindset, you can reach your full potential. Do not let negative self-talk sidetrack you. Do not let the opinions of others discourage you. Your best chance at success is to always remember that practice makes progress but not always perfection.
