Silica Surveillance

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) mandates that employers provide free medical surveillance for employees exposed to respirable crystalline silica at levels of 25 micrograms per cubic meter of air or more during an eight-hour workday (the "action level") for 30 or more days each year. Inhaling these tiny silica particles can lead to serious health issues, including:

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) which makes it hard to breathe
  • Lung cancer
  • Kidney disease
  • Silicosis, a progressive lung disease that can cause disability and death

Protecting your employees and ensuring OSHA compliance

To help you safeguard your workforce from silica-related health risks and comply with OSHA regulations, Banner Occupational Health offers silica surveillance services including:

  • Silica surveillance examinations: This includes a review of the employee's medical and work history, a physical examination, pulmonary function testing, chest X-ray and a latent tuberculosis (TB) test.
  • Medical surveillance: A systematic evaluation of employees exposed to silica dust or other workplace hazards to identify health effects and assess the effectiveness of prevention strategies.

We will collaborate with you to create a tailored silica surveillance program that protects your employees’ health and meets your organization’s specific needs.
