Pulmonary Function Testing

Banner Occupational Health provides pulmonary function testing (PFT) to promote employee health and workplace safety. PFTs measure how effectively a person can move air in and out of their lungs. The most common PFT, spirometry assesses respiratory health for workplace surveillance programs and ensures workers are fit to perform specific tasks. Results from PFTs can guide job assignments, personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements and identify health impacts related to workplace exposure.

PFTs may be recommended or required* for employees in roles that:

  • Involve potential exposure to lung hazards like asbestos, cadmium, coke oven emissions and cotton dust Demand significant physical exertion
  • Require the use of a respirator

*Spirometry testing is mandatory for some workers, as required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). For instance, OSHA standards mandate PFTs for employees handling formaldehyde or benzene when respiratory protection is used.

Benefits of pulmonary function testing for your workforce

PFTs provide a range of advantages, helping both employees and organizations by:

  • Identifying respiratory issues: Detecting pre-existing or developing respiratory conditions and enabling early lung disease diagnosis.
  • Task screening: Determining whether an employee can safely perform specific tasks or will require a respirator.
  • Evaluating exposure impacts: Assessing health effects related to exposure to asbestos, cotton dust and other airborne contaminants.
  • Monitoring respiratory health: Tracking employees' respiratory health over time to detect changes.

Although not required by OSHA, PFTs may be recommended as part of the medical evaluation during respirator fit testing based on an employee’s current respiratory health or risk factors for lung disease.
