Inpatient rehabilitation can be a key part of the healing process for individuals who have suffered a catastrophic illness or injury such as a stroke, seizure, traumatic brain injury, sports injury or motor vehicle accident. For more than 50 years, the Rehabilitation Institute at Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix has delivered comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation services from a robust team of board certified physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians, therapists, nurses and specialists from institutes and centers across the academic teaching hospital.
This comprehensive and integrated approach to our inpatient programs at the Rehabilitation Institute can help you achieve the highest possible level of independence and quality of life. We address your physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs with the ultimate goal of a safe and successful discharge. The Rehabilitation Institute is 68-bed facility dedicated to highly specialized inpatient rehabilitation programs. Here you will receive a personalized therapy schedule every day, created to help you reach your recovery goals. It may include one-on-one physical, occupational or speech therapy sessions, group recreational programs, physician visits, education for you and your family, and other activities designed just for you. Together we will help you re-learn the basic activities of daily living, communication, and mobility.
Each highly collaborative rehabilitation team is focused on you and your support system. Teams are led by physicians who are board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation, and include occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, physical therapists, rehabilitation nurses, recreational therapists, dietitians, neuropsychologists, and case managers. Psychological, social, coping and adaptation skills are also addressed by experts in this area.
Our neuropsychology team specializes in helping you and your family adjust to the new challenges you may face while in rehab and when you return home. Our recreational therapy services provide the opportunity to explore leisure and social skills while adapting to disabilities.

At the Rehabilitation Institute and every one of our centers, we will consistently provide you with education about your injury treatment, wellness, and self-management. We believe this is a core tenet of the rehabilitation process. Patient and caregiver teaching and training helps us achieve our goal of your safe and successful transition home.
The Rehabilitation Institute provides physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM & R) and follow-up care in the rehabilitation medicine clinic to focus on health, wellness and the challenges of living and aging with a disability.
The University of Arizona, in coordination with Banner – University Medicine, conducts a variety of research studies and clinical trials to support a commitment to improving patient care. As a patient at Banner – University Medical Center, you may be eligible to participate, meaning you’ll have access to new treatments which may not be available to the public yet.
