What Is Breast Cancer?

In the United States, about 1 in 8 women (about 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer in their lifetime. Besides skin cancer, breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer among women.

Breast cancer is a disease where cells in the breast grow out of control. Most may start in the breast’s milk ducts; however, they can also start in glands and other tissues. Although not present in all breast cancer, finding a breast lump is the first symptom for many women. Anytime you find a lump or changes to your breast, you should talk to your doctor. The earlier breast cancer is diagnosed, the better the chance for a cure.

Who Gets Breast Cancer?

Most breast cancer occurs in women. Generally, your risk for breast cancer increases with age. If a close blood relative has had breast cancer, this may increase your risk of developing it as well. There are also lifestyle factors, like being overweight, sedentary lifestyle and drinking alcohol, which increase the risk of developing breast cancer.
