Why Firearm Safety Matters
In 2022, more than half of the 863-firearm deaths in Maricopa County were suicides. In 2023, most of the 213-firearm deaths in Pima County were also suicides. Many of these deaths were among men aged 20-49. This shows how important it is to focus on firearm safety and mental health.
Keep People Safe
If you or a loved one own a firearm, store it in a locked safe or cabinet. This helps keep everyone safe, especially during difficult times. There are many ways to secure your firearm, such as using locks, lock boxes or firearm safes. For extra safety, you might ask a responsible friend or family member to hold a firearm temporarily. You could also give them a part of the firearm, like the barrel, so it can’t be used.
Work With Your Counselor
You can talk to your counselor about creating a plan. A plan keeps firearm secure if someone in your home is struggling with mental health. Together, you can come up with a way to limit access to the firearm until things get better. Using a firearm lock and letting a trusted person hold the keys can help.
If You Lose Someone
If someone close to you dies by suicide after getting their firearm back, remember it’s not your fault. It’s natural to feel sadness or guilt. Talking to a counselor or support group can help. Grieving a loss from suicide is hard and involves many feelings.
