If you have a flexible spending account (FSA), you may already use it for medical co-pays or prescriptions. But did you know it can cover a wide range of everyday health essentials? Thanks to expanded FSA eligibility rules, you can get reimbursed for many unexpected items—some you may already be buying!
Before you pay out-of-pocket, check out these seven surprising products and services you can use your FSA funds for.
Skin care products
Taking care of your skin isn’t just about looking good—it’s about staying healthy. Many skin care products that help prevent or treat medical conditions are FSA-eligible, including:
- Sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher)
- Prescription acne medications
- Over-the-counter acne treatments
- Medicated body lotions for conditions like eczema or psoriasis
Over-the-counter (OTC) pain relief and medications
You no longer need a prescription to use FSA funds for common OTC medications. If you or a family member are dealing with pain, heartburn or allergies, you can get reimbursed for:
- Pain relievers like Tylenol, Advil and Aleve
- Heartburn medications such as Prilosec and Tums
- Allergy relief products like Zyrtec, Claritin and Benadryl
- Toothache relief, including Orajel and temporary dental fillings
- Hot and cold therapy packs and headache cooling pads
Women’s health essentials
From periods to pregnancy to menopause, many women's health products are now covered by FSA funds. Eligible items include:
- Menstrual products such as pads, tampons, menstrual cups and sponges
- Pregnancy tests and ovulation kits
- Fertility treatments, including in vitro fertilization (IVF) and egg or sperm storage (may require documentation; check with your plan)
- Birth control pills and emergency contraception
- Breastfeeding supplies, including breast pumps, storage bags and nursing pads
- Hormone replacement therapy (with a prescription)
Lip balm and skin protection
Dry, chapped lips? Your FSA can help! Lip care products that provide medical benefits, such as those with SPF or medicated formulas, may be eligible for reimbursement. Be sure to check your plan's guidelines.
Air quality products
If you have allergies, asthma or other respiratory conditions, improving your air quality can make a big difference. With a doctor’s letter of medical necessity (LMN), you may be able to use FSA funds for:
- Humidifiers and vaporizers
- Air purifiers and filters
- Allergy-friendly bedding and dust mite covers
Dietitian services
If you have a medical condition like diabetes, heart disease, or digestive disorders, your doctor may refer you to a registered dietitian. While general nutrition advice isn't covered, you can use FSA funds for dietitian visits related to a diagnosed condition with an LMN from your doctor.
Mental health support
Your mental and emotional well-being is just as important as your physical health. Many mental health services are eligible for FSA reimbursement, including:
- Therapy sessions (in-person and online)
- Psychiatric care
- Medication for anxiety, depression and other mental health conditions
- Substance abuse treatment programs
Make the most of your FSA
Using your FSA funds wisely can help you save money on essential health and wellness items. Since FSA funds typically expire at the end of the year, be sure to check your balance and use any remaining funds before they’re gone.
